Aaran, a 21 year old student with autism, complex needs and obsessive compulsive disorder flies from London to Boston every term with his family, to attend Boston Higashi High School for young adults with high-functioning autism.
This journey, taken four times a year, consists of navigating through a busy Heathrow Airport, which welcomes an average of 191,200 passengers per day. For the past five years, staff members at Heathrow airport have helped Aaran and his family make this commute as easy and accessible as possible by attempting to recreate the same conditions every time Aaran travels, in order to make him comfortable. Aaran meets the same airport staff at the same check-in desk and visits the same shops before leaving from the same departure gate. Aaran’s mother said: “Aaran would not be able to fly if any of the details were different.”
